Researchers claim to have developed an inexpensive software tool that can diagnose and correct the thousands of tiny network delays responsible for crippling parallel processing speeds in computer clusters.
Researchers at the University of California say their "Lossy Difference Aggregator" could be integrated into today's routers at almost no financial or performance cost and diagnose delays down to tens of microseconds and packet losses that are as infrequent as one in a million.
Apple has told the EU that the problem is isolated, but said little else on the matter.
Apple is investigating media reports that one or more of the company's iPhones have exploded in Europe, a European Commission spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
Researchers at Purdue University in the US have demonstrated a nano-laser that they claim will pave the way for photonic computers using light instead of electrons to process information.
The microscopic "spacer" device is described as a breakthrough in photonics technology because it is the first of its kind to emit visible light and represents a critical component for possible future technologies based on "nanophotonic" circuitry.
"I don't think first-time buyers are going to buy netbooks," said Intel's sales chief Sean Maloney at the Intel Technology Summit.
"The first time you buy something you want the real deal. It's consistent not just in China, but all around the world. If you're going to spend your hard-earned money for the first time, you're going to put a computer in your house," he said.
