Chancellor George Osborne ditched the 50p broadband tax, calling it "archaic".
Proposed by Labour last year, the tax would have charged everyone with a landline an extra 50p a month to help fund the roll out of broadband across the UK.
In keeping with previously made promises to scrap the tax, Osborne said the "landline duty is an archaic way of doing this".
Instead, the coalition government will look to support private firms in their broadband development, and use some funds from the BBC licence fee if necessary.
The Government also announced tax relief for businesses, dropping small companies' tax rate to 20% and lowering the corporation tax to 24% in four years.
Public spending will be slashed by a quarter, with at least some cuts inevitably affecting the large government IT projects the coalition government has promised to clamp down on. The cuts won't affect health care or international development, however.
