Windows 7 spanks Harry Potter

Windows 7 has become the biggest grossing pre-order product ever at Amazon.co.uk, according to the online retailer.

Amazon was among the select few retailers that began selling Windows 7 on pre-order back in July, offering the Home Premium version for as little as £45.

It now claims the operating system has racked up more pre-order sales than other big hitters, such as the Harry Potter novels and the Nintendo Wii.

"The launch of Windows 7 has superseded everyone’s expectations, storming ahead of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as the biggest-grossing pre-order product of all-time, and demand is still going strong," claims Amazon.co.uk managing director Brian McBride.

All of which is welcome news for Microsoft, after the lukewarm launch of Windows Vista, which now even Dell admits was a "bust".

Amazon hasn't revealed exactly how many copies of Windows 7 it has sold, but claims it shifted more copies in the first eight hours on sale than Vista did during its entire pre-sale period.

On a recent visit to the UK, Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer said more than 700,000 Brits were running the free Windows 7 Release Candidate.
