Apple tablet coming in March?

Apple will release its highly anticipated tablet in March, according to reports.

The company is expected to announce a 10in or 11in tablet later this month, but according to the Wall Street Journal it won't be released until March.

The newspaper reports that Apple is currently debating two different finishes for the device, and suggests that when it eventually emerges it will be priced at around $1,000.

IT must help cut emissions, says EU

IT could help Europe reduce carbon emissions by 15 per cent by 2020 and boost its own bottom line while doing it, according to the European Commission.

While the IT sector itself uses eight per cent of EU energy and creates two per cent of emissions, technology like smart grids and smart metering systems can be applied to other sectors – especially buildings, logistics and transport – to help them get greener.

Colour eBook readers coming by Spring

A Barnes & Noble spokesperson has claimed that Plastic Logic will deliver a colour eBook reader to market in "Spring next year."

Colour is the next evolutionary step in the development of eBook readers, the majority of which currently only render in greyscale. Early colour models have yet to touch the mass market with Fujitsu's Flepia only available in Japan for an eye-watering $1,000, and Bridgestone's attempt still at the prototype stage.

Researchers claim parallel processing breakthrough.Researchers claim to have developed an inexpensive software tool that can diagnose and correct the thousands of tiny network delays responsible for crippling parallel processing speeds in computer clusters.

Researchers at the University of California say their "Lossy Difference Aggregator" could be integrated into today's routers at almost no financial or performance cost and diagnose delays down to tens of microseconds and packet losses that are as infrequent as one in a million.

Researchers herald optical-computing breakthrough.Researchers at Purdue University in the US have demonstrated a nano-laser that they claim will pave the way for photonic computers using light instead of electrons to process information.

The microscopic "spacer" device is described as a breakthrough in photonics technology because it is the first of its kind to emit visible light and represents a critical component for possible future technologies based on "nanophotonic" circuitry.
